CLEVEDON CIVIC SOCIETY

AUGUST 2020

Dear Sir/Madam,

APPLICATION 20/P/1440/FUH. 3 storey side extension and rear extension to garden level.

3 The Avenue, Clevedon.

The Civic Society OBJECTS to the above application because our original concerns about extending this house have not been addressed.

This is one of a group of houses of very similar design and scale, constructed with high quality materials and detailing , which make a significant contribution to the character of the upper part of the Town.

This 3 Storey side extension will materially change the scale of the building,as well as adversely affecting the appearance of the whole group. Also the balcony above the garden level extension will overlook the gardens of 52 and 54 Cambridge road, adversely affecting their amenity

If this application is approved it will set a precedent, and other houses in this group could be extended to a similar scale which would destroy the visual cohesion of this part of the Avenue, and a valuable part of the character of Clevedon would be lost.

We do not oppose extending this house if the extension is visually subservient in scale to the existing building, however it is not the case with this application.

We also have concerns about the suitability, durability and appearance of such large areas of render in such a sensitive and visible location.

We ask that North Somerset council works with the applicant to reduce the scale of the extension in accordance with the principles contained in the Residential Design Guide.

Yours Faithfully,

Clevedon Civic Society.
