Perhaps the fact that it was Friday 13th was against us, as, on the morning of this walk the weather was atrocious.

Nevertheless, 14 brave members turned up prepared for the 3-mile walk to discover the challenge of 'Geocaching'. As we stood in the rain it quickly became the consensus of opinion to change our plan; so, instead of actually participating in 'Geocaching', we amended the name of the walk to “The Theory of Geocaching”, and adjourned to The Salthouse for coffee and teacakes and a verbal description of this popular activity.

We learnt that Geocaching is a world-wide outdoor treasure hunt in which a container holding a number of items is hidden at a particular location. Participants with a GPS devise (Global Positioning System) then find this “cache” by means of coordinates which are posted on the Internet. (GPS apps are also available for iPhones and Androids).

This is a family-friendly activity in which you can find yourself walking in interesting locations that you may not have previously known existed. 'Geocaching' can also change what were previously reluctant young walkers into avid treasure hunters!
