The Peveril of the Peak, Thorpe, Dovedale

For their 2021 Walking Weekend, 18 members of the Clevedon Social Walking group assembled at the Peveril of the Peak hotel for a couple of days of walking and sightseeing.

With the effects of Covid still lingering, it was not to be expected that the full activities of a HF Walking weekend would return, but there were fewer restrictions on movement and no threat of lockdown to endanger the holiday.

The HF hotel was bright and welcoming, and this year everyone was accommodated in the main building, even though the rooms we were in were spread far and wide over all the floors. The dining room was large and spacious, if a little noisy once all the groups dining got into full conversation, and the food was excellent and the staff attentive and helpful.

We had three tables reserved for our group to dine at, and before and after the meal we could meet in a cosy nook at the end of the lounge for drinks and general chit-chat.

The walks over the weekend were of varying difficulties; on Saturday the whole group ambled down to the Stepping Stones on the River Dove, where some time was spent crossing (and in some cases recrossing) the stones and taking photos of various individuals' efforts. After this the group split, 10 taking a longer walk up the valley and back, the others completing a circuit back to the hotel via Thorpe village. On Sunday the whole group walked up the Tissington Trail and  looked around the village before returning to the hotel by a more direct route.

On the two pages linked below can be found more detailed reports and many photos submitted by various members of the group either directly or via the Whatsapp Group.

All are returning for another weekend in 2022, this time we going to Church Stretton in Shropshire to walk around Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd.
