Dovedale
Started with all 18 of us leaving the hotel by the back gate.
Red flag flying so needed to keep to the left of the firing range. Thorpe Cloud was literally in the cloud. Parting of the ways at the famous stepping stones.
Our group filled the left bank of the Dove. A splendid Dipper was seen on a branch and bright yellow Mimulus flowers on the river bank.
Amazing geology; Twelve Apostles, Tissington Spires, Ilam rock and coves.
Lunch stop at 12.45 which even had toilets, a bench and a cafe if we had wanted at Milldale. Two American widgeon, we think, sighted amongst the Mallards.
Retraced our steps to the now very busy stepping stones. Crossed these without any one falling in. Then to the road and a 300 feet steep climb up to Thorpe village.
A stroll across the field back to base finished an enjoyable 8 plus mile walk. Total climb was 1700 feet.

After separating from the larger group going up the valley, 6 of us walked down the valley towards the National Trust Car park.
Turning to recross the river by a bridge, we then struck out on field paths alongside the river to the road back to Thorpe village. Confronted by a steep hill, it was decided to tackle the steep footpath directly up the hill and then across fields towards Thorpe Church, where we found a couple of convenient benches on which to sit and eat our packed lunches.
After a visit to the church, we wandered through the village, stopping to admire a village information board painted by a local artist before heading back to the hotel for a well-earned rest and afternoon tea.
