Sandford Quarry

Thirteen people and two dogs set off on a warm but dull morning and four carloads parked in Winscombe.

Following the road to Sandford, we turned off on a path leading to the Strawberry Line where we continued until a bridge led back to the main road. Up the road to Quarry Road where we saw a large lime kiln and passed by the site of the old forge where a determined lady was hammering old burnt bricks prior to the restoration of the forge.

Further on we learned about the Sandford Winscombe reward land given for quarrying, and met an impressive number of volunteers clearing scrub which had obscured the magnificent views from this ridge. We stopped for a brief refreshment break at the edge of Sandford Hill and to enjoy yet more extensive views.

A fork in the path led to the quarry and an old railway wagon. Descending some steps, we regained Quarry Road and made our way to the main road. Turning off into The Grove we managed to find a way between houses which led once more to the Strawberry Line which we took as far as Millenium Green and the centre of Winscombe.

Some of the party returned to Clevedon while others found the lost dog lead at the bottom of the owner’s bag and set off for the pub. An interesting and enjoyable 3 mile walk.
