A group of eleven walkers met up at Strode car park on this bright Autumn morning and drove to The Batch, Churchill, and parked just below the Crown Inn from where our walk commenced.
The route took us up the (very) old Bristol Road, now known as The Batch, a short way and then down through some woodlands towards the A38 and across to Tanglewood. Having safely, and very carefully, traversed this busy main road and a minor flood on the other side, we soon found ourselves trekking up towards Dolebury Warren.
This is a Nature Reserve managed by the Avon Wildlife Trust. It is also a site of Special Scientific Interest and an ancient monument – a hill fort built some 3,000 years ago by its first iron age settlers. It was occupied by various groups until Roman Times and in mediaeval times used as a rabbit warren to stock their dinner tables. All of this presented an extremely interested historic backdrop to a glorious autumn morning walk. Rod had kindly provided information sheets on some of the historic and structural details on the site.
