10 walkers took on this part of the challenge of walking the 45 walkable bridges of Bristol. This walk took in a part of Bristol most of which had not touched upon before by the Footpaths Group, the industrial areas east of Bristol Temple Meads and along the Feeder canal.
Referring to the map in the first image below, the bridges encountered were as follows:
22. Totterdown Bridge
12. Sparke Evans Park Bridge [closed for examination and repairs]
13 & 14. St. Philips Causeway Bridges
15. Barton Hill Bridge
16 & 19. Netham Locks Bridges
17. New Brislington Bridge
18. St. Annes Bridge
20. Feeder Canal Footbridge
21. Marsh Bridge
While the scenery was for the most part industrial, a couple of parks were traversed and the easternmost part of the walk verged on the remote and peaceful. The walk was slated to be approximately 4.5 miles, but the diversion enforced by the closure of bridge No.12 pushed the distance actually walked to 5.2 miles.
All agreed that the history of the bridges and events surrounding them made for a most interesting walk, after which we retired to the Gordano Gate in Portishead for an afternoon lunch.
