Cardiff and Penarth

Our group of 14 left Yatton Railway Station bright and early to arrive at Cardiff Central Station.

We walked alongside the river Taff to Cardiff Bay, on the way we looked at different buildings and the boats on the river Taff, we also walked through a wetlands nature reserve.

After resting over a good lunch we were very impressed with the mix of old and modern buildings skirting the bay.

At the start of the barrage leading to Penarth we were treated to a display of swifts mainly centred around a modern swift tower with many nesting boxes, although we did not see any enter or depart the nest boxes.

At the Penarth end of the barrage, excess water left the harbour at great force via huge sluices above which were massive counter balances to the sections of the road that swing up for tall boats.

A steep walk led up to a lovely church with splendid views across the bay. We strolled down through Penarth town to the railway station and caught the train back to Cardiff Central for a relaxing journey homeward.

It was a full day out but very enjoyable.
